If you've recently gotten your hands on a USB interface (such as the SWAMP X-USB) and you're having some trouble getting microphone input into your computer, take a look at this guide as it may be a simple configuration error with Windows 11 which can be quickly fixed!

Windows 11 seems to have resulted in a few class-compliant USB devices such as the X-USB to be initially set to mute when connected to a PC. This is a software setting which can be found and changed via the following steps:

  1. In the task bar, at the bottom right of your screen, right click on the speaker icon to reveal the options, and left click "open sound settings"

  2. In the sound settings window that opens after clicking, at the bottom click on the section that says "More Sound Settings" under the Advanced area.

  3. In the sound window that opens after clicking, navigate to the "recording" tab at the top and find the input device (in this case, X USB or whatever it shows up as on your system)

  4. Right click the device, and select the "properties" menu item.

  5. In the properties window that opens, select the "levels" tab and make sure that the volume is turned up and the device is unmuted.
If you make changes, remember to press "apply".

…and done! That should ensure that your device is set-up in a way that it is fully useable as an audio input device. You should be able to use it with any program, such as Audacity, Zoom, and even your favourite DAW.
